Our First Hill ophthalmologists and eye doctors provide comprehensive specialty eye care in Seattle, including cataract surgery, glaucoma care, cornea treatment, retinal care, dry eye treatment, and pediatric eye services.
Prior to your Visit
Please bring your photo ID, insurance card, and a list of current medications to your appointment. If you have glasses, bring them with you. If you wear contact lenses, please note:
- Soft contact lenses: Insert at least 2 hours before your appointment
- Hard contact lenses: Insert at least 4 hours before your appointment
These contact lens guidelines do not apply if you are coming in for a cataract surgery evaluation.
During your Visit
Your exam may include vision testing, ocular pressure measurement, glasses prescription updates, dilation to check the health of your retinas, and additional testing based on your ocular and medical history.
Cataract evaluations may include biometry (IOLMaster) and corneal topography to determine your intraocular lens (IOL) options. Accurate results require following contact lens removal timelines (Soft Contacts 2 weeks prior, Hard Contacts 1 month prior).
Face coverings are optional unless required by your provider for a specific procedure or due to public health guidance.
After your Visit
You may be light-sensitive or having difficulty focusing up close for a few hours as your dilation wears off; however, you will be safe to drive.
Annually:
Adults and children who wear glasses or contacts
Adults over 40 who have a family history of eye disease such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, or cataract
Adults and children with a history of eye injury or eye disease
If a physician has recommended that you have an eye exam yearly
Every 2 years:
Adults who do not wear glasses or contacts
No personal or family history of eye disease
If a physician has recommended eye exams every 2 years
Cataract surgery is performed when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, and daily activities become difficult due to reduced vision. During cataract surgery, the surgeon removes the natural lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Your doctor will give you a prescription for glasses after your visit. You do not need an appointment to see one of our opticians who will help you select the best frame and lens type for your needs.
For contact lenses, you must see one of our contact lens specialists in addition to seeing the doctor, in accordance with Washington State law. These specially trained opticians will help you select the best lens type for your eyes. If you are having a contact lens examination and you currently have contact lenses, you should wear them to your appointment.
